The eyes are the windows of light. They are the primary channels of wisdom. They are the main sources of learning. A person learns more than 85% through the sense of sight. It is a well-known fact that many of the eye problems start in the very early age of infancy. They have to be taken care of in their childhood. Otherwise, those children with eye problems will have to face potentially serious problems in their later years.

It has become quite essential that the eyes of infants should be checked even at their birth. A pediatric ophthalmologist may be able to tell if there is any problem in the eyes of a newborn baby.

A family doctor or a pediatrician will screen the eyes of a baby at birth and at periodical intervals. He may suggest a visit to a specialist or a pediatric ophthalmologist if there is any need. He is skilled at recognizing the subtle signs of a baby's eye problems and diagnose treatments.

Increasing eye problems of modern children

1) Blocked tear ducts:

Blocked tear ducts is a common condition found among newborn infants. It occurs when a membrane in the tear duct which drains to the nose does not open after birth. It results in permanent watery eyes and mucous discharge, since tears cannot drain. This problem may be solved automatically by nature. But some infants may need medical intervention to open the membrane.

2) Lazy eye or Amblyopia:

It is a condition found among infants. It is a condition in which the sight of one eye is reduced because the eye and brain do not work together properly. It may look normal for outside view. But the coordination between the eye and brain may not be normal. This may lead to complications in later years. The ophthalmologists may prescribe special drops to make the eye and brain function properly and protect the children from visual loss.

3) Cataract in infants:

Generally we find cataracts only in old people. But some children are born with cataract or they may develop it as a result of other diseases. Genetic reasons may cause this defect. The infants may have only a blurred vision because of this cataract.

4) Crossed or wandering eyes:

An infant may be seen gazing straight with one eye while the other eye may be moving up and down. This condition is termed as Strabismus. This can be corrected by a surgery to adjust the muscles of the eye.

Eye problems among infants should be checked and corrected in the early years. If a child has a vision problem frequent screenings and proper medication have may be needed.
