Cataract and Its Prevention: Home Remedies for Cataract

What is cataract? Cataract is a condition where the lens of the eye becomes cloudy or opaque. Consequently, the patient’s visual acuity is greatly hampered. When the lens becomes opaque, the entrance of light in to the eye is influenced, thus affecting the vision. Causes of Cataract Diminished nourishment to the lens is the primary cause for the development of cataract. Oxidative damage by free radicals is another significant factor Deposition of salts between the lens fibers, impinges them, causing disintegration and cloudiness Cataract is also associated with certain disorders like: diabetes, gall bladder diseases, gastrointestinal tract diseases and fatty acid intolerance Symptoms of Cataract The first symptom that manifests is blurring of the vision. As the disorder progresses, the patient may complain of spots before the eyes or double vision. In advanced stages of cataract, objects appear as blobs of light. Also, on examination, the pupil appear...

A Diet Rich in Antioxidants Prevents Macular Degeneration of the Eye and Blindness

Experts at Brigham Young University, United States, disclose that there occur two damaging mechanisms within the retina, which cause macular degeneration.Individuals who develop age related macular degeneration (ARMD), first suffer the loss of central-vision. Sooner or later, the individual loses complete vision. Heidi Vollmer discovered that ARMD occurs due to a build-up of A2E, a natural by-product of various cellular processes. However, contrasting to other cellular by-products, A2E does not decompose, causing undue damage to the retina. The other factor responsible for ARMD is damage to the mitochondria within the cells. Excessive A2E disrupts the energy manufacture by the mitochondria, which consequently results in the death of the photo-receptors (cells for vision). Studies were performed to test the photo-receptors of cows, rats and humans. Results showed that antioxidants prevent damage to the cells responsible for vision. What’s more, antioxidants can extend the life s...

Increasing Eye Problems of Modern Infants

The eyes are the windows of light. They are the primary channels of wisdom. They are the main sources of learning. A person learns more than 85% through the sense of sight. It is a well-known fact that many of the eye problems start in the very early age of infancy. They have to be taken care of in their childhood. Otherwise, those children with eye problems will have to face potentially serious problems in their later years.  It has become quite essential that the eyes of infants should be checked even at their birth. A pediatric ophthalmologist may be able to tell if there is any problem in the eyes of a newborn baby. A family doctor or a pediatrician will screen the eyes of a baby at birth and at periodical intervals. He may suggest a visit to a specialist or a pediatric ophthalmologist if there is any need. He is skilled at recognizing the subtle signs of a baby's eye problems and diagnose treatments. Increasing eye problems of modern children 1) Blocked tear ducts: Block...

Three Common Vision Problems

Focus To perceive the world accurately, it is required that the visual image is focused on the retina. In a lot of people this (no longer) works well, resulting in the need to wear glasses. The cornea and the lens focus the image on a wrong focal point. This article discusses three common problems with vision: Shortsightedness, or myopia Farsightedness, or hyperopia, Presbyopia. Fig. 1: The Human Eye (source: http://www.freedomscientific.com/resources/vision-anatomy-eye.asp) Shortsightedness or Myopia When the stretched out lens results in a focal point in front of the retina, a person will have trouble seeing far away objects sharply. The light waves from adjacent point will overlap, causing a blurry image. Objects close by will cause no such problem, as the focal point here lies further backwards in the eye. People who experience difficulties in seeing objects at a distance, but not with watching objects close by, suffer from shortsightedness or myo...

Best Lasik Surgeon in Louisville

Lasik is the most common form of laser eye surgery and is suitable for over 90% of patients. It offers the least discomfort and the quickest recovery time of any laser eye surgery and most patients can return to work within 24 hours. Treating both eyes with Lasik surgery takes around 15 minutes and the surgeon will use either a computer-controlled instrument or a laser to create a very thin circular flap of tissue in the outer cornea. This flap is folded back to expose the cornea bed before the laser removes a precise pre-scheduled amount of corneal tissue. Once the flap is replaced it is held in place by the natural processs of the eye and in the majority of cases the flap will  heal in a few hours. It takes a specialist eye surgeon specifically trained in Lasik eye surgery to carry out this procedure and in Louisville there is the Lasik Plus Vision Centre. The surgery is headed  by Dr Jason Greenberg D.O who has been performing laser vision correction for nine years, eig...

Facts About Myopia or Short Sight

What is short sightedness or myopia? Myopia is the medical term for short sight. It is a refractive disorder and not a disease. A person can become myopic if the eyeball is too long (simple myopia), due to refractive error (degenerative myopia), because of spasms of the ciliary muscles (pseudo myopia), difficulty in seeing things in night time or dim light because of pupil dilation (night myopia, acquired myopia which occurs due to consequences of sudden changes in health conditions like rise in glucose level or oxygen toxicity or short term myopia which is caused due to the nature of close work. The light from the images falls just in front of the retina instead of the retina itself. This causes shortsightedness. The affected person is not able to view things clearly without the help of glasses or contact lenses. Viewing objects on a close scale causes strain on the eyeballs and thus cause myopia. Children who spent their time indoors most of their free time watching television ...

What Your Optical Prescription Means: Deciphering Terminology and Symbols

If you wear eye glasses or contact lenses, you probably have a general understanding of your optical prescription.  Perhaps your Optometrist or Optician has explained it to you, maybe you had enough interest to inquire yourself, or you simply remembered from biology class.  Nonetheless, I have answered the question, "What does this mean?" numerous times from patients during the course of my work day as a certified Optometric Assistant.  So, to help you sort it all out, here are some answers to help you decipher the meanings of some oft-used optical terms and symbols.  Myopia, Nearsightedness, and Minus Power are all referring to the same thing:  Your eyes see well at near objects, but because myopia causes the eye to be shorter in length (the focal point is theoretically behind the retina), you need a minus power lens to focus clearly on objects in the distance.  Denoted by a minus (-) sign in a written optical prescription. Hyperopia...

The Difference Between LASIK and PRK Surgery

Before LASIK surgery, there was a procedure called PRK (photorefractive keratectomy). Though both procedures lead to the same results, PRK has a longer-- but safer-- recovery period. The difference between the two procedures has to do with the cornea. During LASIK surgery, the doctor creates a flap in the cornea, goes in with the laser to reshape the lens, and then flaps the cornea back over. Recovery time is a just a couple days. However, some corneas may be slightly misshapen or too thin to withstand the flap. In this case, the doctor will opt to perform PRK. There is no incision with this method. Instead, the doctor buffs off a layer of the cornea in order to get at the lens. The recovery time for this procedure is a couple of weeks, because the cornea cells need time to grow back. The PRK procedure is completely painless. It takes about 5 minutes per eye and when you sit up, your vision will be clear. The doctors will likely tell you that your vision will get much worse over the...

Who Do You Need to See? An Optometrist, Optician, or Ophthalmologist

Sometimes, in the world of health care, there are so many different classifications, roles, specializations, and so many unpronounceable titles, that it can become rather confusing for the average layman to sort through it all.  Take eye care, for example.  There exists three separate fields of care within the general umbrella of Eye Care.  These are Optometry, Opticianry, and Ophthalmology.  Have you ever wondered who does what, exactly?  Is there any crossover between the different fields?  And, most importantly, who do you need to see? To help you sort this out, I will describe the roles and responsibility of, and what to expect when you visit, each of these three:  Optometrists, Opticians, and Ophthalmologists.   To begin, I present you with a fictitious patient named Mr. White... Mr. White is 47 years old and has had perfect eyesight all of his life.  In fact, he can't even remember wh...

Proper Care and Protection of Your Eyes

Eyes are  the most hardworking part of our body ,thus, eye safety is deemed important if we want to save our vision. Proper food intake and wearing protective gears against eye threats can help save our eyes. Eye threats can be from light, small particles, wind blast, heat, sea spray or some type of ball or puck used in sports. Sometimes we experienced headaches and eye strain especially if working more than 10 hours a day. Sight-Saving Tips 1.  When reading, good lighting, erect position and proper distance should be practiced. Children should be taught not to be too close to computer or television, and have an allocated time for them to stay so as not to strain their eyes watching or playing games in the computer. 2.  Choose the right toys for children, avoid pointed,...

Nocturnal Lagophthalmos: Sleeping with Eyes Open

Lagophthalmos is a fairly common disorder with children. You may have noticed that your children sleep with their eyes open or that their eyes don’t fully close when they sleep. You may have been told that you do this. I was told that my eyes didn’t fully close when I slept as a kid. I must have outgrown it, because no one has told me that since I have grown up. Adults that have lagophthalmos may have a harder time of it because they experience dry eyes during the day time when they are awake. It’s painful because during sleep the eyes are open to the air, which dries out the corneas. It can be painful while the eyes try to create enough tears to lubricate the eyes properly. Sometimes with older patients, the condition is compounded by dry eye syndrome. What causes nocturnal lagophthalmos? Nocturnal lagophthalmos can be caused by an infection, by trauma to the eye, or facial paralysis such as with Bell’s palsy. It may also be caused by a stroke. The function ...

How To Relieve Dry And Scratchy Eyes

Itchy eyes are one of the common eye problems that many people experience at some point of time in their life. In most cases, itchy eyes are caused due to eye infections and allergic reactions. Allergies can be in the form of environment pollutants (dust, molds, pollen, pet dander, etc.) and cosmetics. It may also be manifested as a symptom for eye related problems such as dry eyes and conjunctivitis (pink eye). Some of the common symptoms that are associated with itchy eyes include excessive tear production (watery eyes), redness and puffiness of the eyes. Occasionally, patients of common cold have itchy eyes. In some individuals, eye medications, like antibiotic drops, can lead to itching in the eyes. Foods That Improve Vision

For the aging population, there is good news on the eye-health front. New research from the Archives of Ophthalmology indicates that fewer people over the age of 40 are developing macular degeneration, a condition that causes vision loss in older adults. According to researchers, the decrease is being attributed to an increase in public awareness concerning health issues and better dietary choices. Macular degeneration is not the only eye-related condition that is positively influenced by a good diet. Improvements in some other common vision disorders such as glaucoma and cataracts have been observed, as well. Glaucoma is characterized by excessive pressure caused by fluid that builds up around the eyeball. Over time, this pressure impairs the optic nerve, causing vision loss. The formation of cataracts, which commonly occurs as people age, causes focusing problems, blurred vision, and other problematic changes in vision. Through extensive research, scientists have linked the presenc...

Where Does the Color of Your Eyes Come From?

Eye color is determined by the amount and type of pigments in the eye's iris. Humans and other animals have many variations in eye color, as blue, brown, grey, green, and others. The genetics of eye color are complicated, and color is determined by multiple genes. The once-held view that blue eye color is a simple recessive trait has been shown to be incorrect. The genetics of eye color are so complex that almost any parent-child combination of eye colors can occur. In human eyes, these variations in color are attributed to varying ratios of a form of melanin produced in the iris. The brightly colored eyes of many bird species are largely determined by other pigments. Genetic determination of eye color Eye colors can range from the most common color, brown, to the least common, green. Eye color is an inherited trait influenced by more than one gene. The actual number of genes that contribute to eye color is currently unknown, but there are a few likely candidates. A recent study fou...

How to Massage Our Eyes Yoga and Eye Care

The eye message is so important now days as our working conditions have changed significantly. We have to give relief to our eyes through the massage. For it we follow the following method of massage: We use our fingers from the base of our nose to upwards moving around the nostrils to go around the eyes, then from the eyebrows, we move downwards from the both sides of the eyes. This needs to be going upwards and downwards as the skin reacts to upwards motion more than it does to the downward because the hair, as the Rome-Coop (the Hindi word for pores body uses for outlet of perspiration and sweating) get better treatment if we move upwards. We can massage on the bone just above the eyes, as it has the point of acupressure. These points of acupressure are all around the eyes, starting from the base of the nose. There is a great benefit in this massage as the eyes; nose and the ears work together. There are some points on the ears, which are having a close relation with eyes, which ...

Protect Your Vision From UV Damage: The Importance of Wearing Sunglasses

By now, most people know of the importance of using sunscreen to protect their skin from burning, wrinkles, and cancer due to the harmful effect of UV rays.  Fewer people seem to be aware of the damaging effect the sun can have on their eyes; or, more specifically how UV rays can damage the retina, lens, or cornea.  These harmful effects are increased when sunlight is reflected from sand, snow, water, or pavement.  A brief personal example of this will illustrate the point.  In my youth, I sunburned my contact lenses onto my corneas (the clear refractive outer surface) while snow skiing without goggles or sunglasses. When I was finally able to soak and peel the contact lenses off my eyes, the resulting sensation was as if someone had poured salt and sand into them, and any light exacerbated the pain. I was essentially "snow blind" for days, during which time I stayed in bed with a cold cloth draped over my face to cool my eyes a...

Eye Health: Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis (GPC)

As a soft contact lens wearer, I have often heard it said to not fall asleep while wearing the lenses, to avoid damaging your eyes or the contacts themselves.  I also knew that it is important to use eye drops for both your eyes and the contact lenses to stay moisturized.  Not sleeping in my contacts was not a problem, since I was active as a teen, with little time for sleeping at night as it was.  But what I didn't realize is how fragile the eyes can be. Bad habits, easy to form Hay fever has always been an issue for me - there were times when I had to even stay home from school because of sinus drainage and fitful sneezing that left me exhausted.  Yet I was still a prime candidate for contact lenses, and never once thought my allergies would eventually interfere with wearing my lenses.  But there came a day when two things happened - I began feeling run down from a stressful time I was experiencing, and the resulting fatigue led to my occasionally snoozing ...

Preventing Eye Injury While Using Computers

Almost all of us will agree that staring at a monitor harms the eyes. Those who spend the night surfing the Internet often complain of burning eyes, flickering lids and blurred vision. Studies show that the eyes shift about 30,000 times in an eight-hour work session at the PC. The overtaxed eye cannot possibly keep up with this kind of performance. Hazy and flickering monitors further add to the danger. It has also been established that looking steadily at the screen for a long time reduces the blinking frequency. This leads to the ‘Dry Eye Syndrome’. In extreme cases, the cornea can dry up, affecting vision. In some cases, this can also result in the loss of sight. When you work intensively on a computer, you may develop headaches, backache, sore or burning eyes. In the first few months of intensively using a PC you may just ignore all these problems. These are your body's natural ways of telling you that all is not right in your eye’s relation with the PC. If left...

Effective Eye Vitamins to improve eyesight problems

Eyes, like all other organs, need certain vitamins to stay healthy and work well into our later years. Proper nutrition and a good eye vitamin formula is vital for healthy eyes and may play an important role in the fight against cataracts and macular degeneration. Certain eye vitamins can literally decrease your chances of getting an age-related eye disease by 25%. Why we need effective eye vitamins? As we age, the importance of vitamins increases drastically for a couple of reasons. Our body starts to naturally get tired from working for so many years, and needs more vitamins and nutrients to keep it working healthily and properly. Second, our body tends to have a harder time digesting and processing the vitamins that we do get in our regular diet. This is why people over the age of 50 need to take vitamins even if they have healthy eating habits. Lastly, there are some vitamins and nutrients that help prevent the eye from certain age-related eye diseases, and that are not found in ...

Cataract Surgery - What to Expect Before and After Surgery

When I learned that I had a cataract, it seemed like no big deal. When I went to the opthamologist, he prepared me by letting me know that it was an everyday procedure and that he performed thousands of these over the years. His office staff was well prepared for any questions that I had between that day and the day of the surgery. My surgery was planned for about a month from that date, giving me enough time to give serious attention to the upcoming event. Prior to surgery, was sent the instructions to have three prescriptions for eye drops filled and start using the eye drops three days prior to the surgery; one drop in the affected eye three times a day. The drops were brand names; Vigamox, Nevanac, and Durezol and the cost with coupons supplied and a rebate on one, was nearly $200 with my medicare part D. The size of the bottles was a shock for the price, as they were very small. I continued to use the drops as prescribed until the night before the surgery. The thing that gave me...

Taking Care of Our Eyes - The Windows to Our Soul

Sun Worshiper's Advice: Lighting Effects and Solar-Eye Exercise

SUN WORSHIPER'S ADVICE: LIGHTING EFFECTS AND SOLAR-EYE EXERCISE Unlike many Caucasians who love to get a sporty-looking tan. Filipinos usually shield themselves from the sun in whatever way they can, hiding under the umbrellas, caps, and sun-glasses or sun-block lotions. If it’s the scorching hot noon sun, go ahead and hide. But I remember my mother saying that babies should always be exposed to the early morning sun to be strong and healthy, and I still see the practiced in many places. People from the northern regions of the earth crave for the sun and long for the time of year when they would see it again, yet many of us tropical dwellers don’t even appreciate the benefits of the early morning rays, which are good for one’s health. Some of the most poignant lines in English drama are spoken by Archie Rice, the failed, drunken music hall artist in John Osborne's famous play "The Entertainer."  In one of his soliquys to the audience he points to his eyes and says "See these eyes - I am dead behind these eyes." The visible colors in the light spectrum are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet along with every combination of colors that exists in between each color. Light is measured in wavelengths. For a simple way to visualize what wavelength is, drop a small stone in a calm body of water. The stone creates a series of waves that radiate outwa...

PRK Recovery: A Firsthand Experience

When I was twenty-five years old, I had already been nearsighted for almost twenty years. Waking up and being able to see my alarm clock was a pipe dream for me. I would watch Lost or Castaway and think “If I ever get stranded on a desert island, I’m going to be in big trouble after day one when my eyes dry up and my contact lenses fall out.” Finally, I decided to fix my vision for good and went in for a Lasik consult. I was told that because of the condition of my cornea, they would perform a procedure called PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) instead. (For an explanation of the difference between Lasik and PRK, see https://knoji.com/the-difference-between-lasik-and-prk-surgery/) I tried to do some research but I had a hard time finding a firsthand account of the surgery, so I have put together a recap of my recovery experience. Thursday May 13th: The day of surgery. The procedure took all of ten minutes to complete. When I sat up on the table, I could read the clock...

Buying Eyeglasses From a Chain Store Vs. Buying Eyeglasses From an Independent Optician

Many people believe that they can save money by purchasing their eyeglasses from a chain store like Sears Optical or Walmart.  However, an eyeglass wearer needs to consider more factors than just price when deciding where to buy eyeglasses. Chain stores keep their prices down by purchasing discounted frames and lenses in bulk, which allows them to get their products at much cheaper prices.  However, many of the lenses they sell to their patients are made with much older technologies, meaning that the optics, or how well a patient can see with the lenses, are of a much lower standard than newer lenses.  If price is a major concern, many independent opticians will guide their patients to an older lens, but they make sure to suggest a lens that still has decent optics.  The lens will be newer than what many chain stores would offer, but will still be cheaper because it is not the most recent in lens technology.  This is especially helpful for progressive wearers,...

A New Treatment for Glaucoma Could Involve Vitamin E Lined Contact Lenses

There is possibly a new treatment on the market for glaucoma that will involve the use of contact lenses. Florida researchers have developed a contact lens lined with Vitamin E. Anuj Chauhan, an associate professor in the department of chemical engineering at the University of Florida, says these lenses may cure glaucoma. Keeping the glaucoma medication pressed against the eye can increase the efficacy of the drugs being administered. Anuj Chauhan decided to do the study because he was dissatisfied with current medications for glaucoma administered by eye drops. Chauhan says the problem with eye drops is that within two to five minutes after the eye drops are administered they are washed away by tears and therefore do not stay at the intended site. Only 1 to 5 percent of the medications stay on cornea of the eye where it was meant to be and the rest is absorbed into the bloodstream through the tear ducts and travel all through the body. He says because of this, glaucoma sufferers ...

Price of Vision Knows Only One Who Don't Have..

Age Related Macular Degeneration can result in the inability to read letters and see central visual details. The Age Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) showed that vitamin supplements containing high-doses of Anti-Oxidants and Zinc reduced the likelihood of progression of intermediate and advanced degrees of macular degeneration by 25%! Archives of Ophthalmology just published a study by Doctors Li Ming Dong, Stark, Jefferys, Al-Hazzaa, S. Bressler, Solomon, N. Bressler, entitled, "Progression of Age-Related Macular Degeneration After Cataract Surgery." The conclusion of the study was that the low incidence rate of neovascular age-related macular degeneration development between one week and one year after cataract surgery did not support the hypothesis that cataract surgery resulted in an increase in the risk of age-related disease progression. Several eyes appeared to have disease progression on postsurgery week one on fluorescein angiograms, suggesting that many cases of p...

Important Eye Health Tips

It is important to pay attention to eye health, especially in this hectic and busy world that we live in. Many of us work away at our computers and we do not blink as often as we should. Adults keep their eyes moist by blinking about 15 times a minute. We blink half as often while using a computer. The same thing happens when we are reading or watching television for long periods of time. When a person is totally focused on a page or a screen and squinting starts happening, it is a signal that there is some eye strain and it is time to blink. It is recommended to position a computer monitor two feet away from the face and a little bit below eye level. This helps the eyes to stay slightly more relaxed and for lubricating tears to be produced. Dry air is hard on the eyes. Living in an area with low humidity, high altitude, wind and air pollution can contribute to dry eyes. Add to that dry air from furnace heat or air conditioning and the condition gets worse. Driving in a car also adds ...

Tips for Saving Money by Cleaning Your Eyeglasses Properly

If you wear glasses, you need them to see.  You know that they can, understandably, be expensive.  If they are expensive and necessary, then you want to do everything you can to keep them in top order.  This includes cleaning them properly.  Not cleaning your glasses can lead to the frame deteriorating, and also to decreased vision-- you are not going to see well through dirty glasses!  Not cleaning them properly can cause scratches to the lenses, and these cannot be repaired, unlike scratches on cds.  The only way to get rid of scratches on an eyeglass lens is to replace the lens, which can get expensive.  Even if the scratches are only in the anti-reflective (AR) coating on the lenses, striping the AR coating off could ruin the lenses.  Preventing scratches extends the life of the lenses. The best way to clean your glasses is to run them under tap water.  If you wish to use a soap, stick to gentle, non-abrasive liquid soaps.  Any soa...
